Senior Order of Merit
Devon Golf’s series of Senior Order of Merit tournaments (this is the County not DMVGA) get underway in March. They are open to every male golfer of 50 YEARS OF AGE or more on the date of the event, regardless of handicap. 9 events over the season make up the County Orders of Merit; plural because there is both Scratch and Handicap.
The OOM winners will be decided at the final event of the year, the County Senior Stableford Championship at Royal North Devon in early September, and the top 9 players on each OOM, Scratch and Handicap, will be invited to the end of season “Race to Bovey” event at Bovey Castle in October.
You can play in as many or as few as you fancy. You score OOM points by being 55 or more in age and finishing in the top 10 Scratch or top 10 Handicap at each event. Your best 5 results will count towards the OOM.
The first five events take place before the end of May. The four run by the County directly are open for entry on the County website, whilst Bob Knott Trophy entries are open on the Churston website. The events are: -
Sunday 17th March at The Warren Thursday 4th April at East Devon Sunday 28th April at Yelverton Sunday 12th/Monday 13th May at Churston – Bob Knott Trophy over 36 holes. 18 holes each day, leaders out last day 2. Tuesday 28th May at Teignmouth
The Devon Golf-run events are all 18 holes. The Warren has space for about another 30 entries; the first 2 hours (from 7.30am) have space at East Devon although it’s busy later with the last 12 times all full; plenty of spots for the events at Yelverton and Teignmouth, whilst the Bob Knott has not been available for entry long.
Genuinely an opportunity to play alongside and with the blokes in the very successful County Senior side, not to mention good days out on good courses. For those in the low single figure arena an opportunity to stick a hand up for the County team for now (if over 55) or for the future. The full list of events including those later in the season can be found at www.devongolf.org.uk. Choose Competitions on the home page, which will give you the drop down to click Orders of Merit and then by clicking on the Seniors tab.

Johnson secures lifetime status
The first World Golf Championship of 2019 took place over the weekend and for those of you who haven't heard about WGC events before, these are arguably the biggest events outside of golf's four Majors.
Perhaps, then, it was no surprise to see two of golf's biggest names battle it out for top-spot over the four days, with Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy going blow-for-blow in Mexico as golf's other stars struggled to keep pace.
The final result was a five-shot victory for the big-hitting American, thanks to five birdies during a blemish-free back-nine on Sunday afternoon. For McIlroy, it was a story of what could have been as the Northern Irishman mixed countless birdies with nine bogeys and a double-bogey across the week.
This was Johnson’s 20th PGA Tour title and pushed him back up to number two in the World Rankings, within touching distance of Justin Rose at the summit. It was a week where DJ also joined illustrious company in becoming only the fifth man in the last 50 years to win 20 PGA Tour titles before turning the grand old age of 35. But can you name the other four? Here’s a clue: two of them were playing in the tournament at weekend.
However, aside from claiming his sixth WGC title and third in Mexico, it meant Johnson will earn lifetime status on Tour as soon as he completes his 15th season. Not a bad weekend for the American and proof that hard work certainly pays off.
P.s. The other four were of course Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Johnny Miller, and Tom Watson.

Anyone else but Tiger?
Sometimes, when someone does something utterly brilliant you just have to bow down and say well done. Rewind to Friday afternoon in Mexico when Tiger Woods found himself in the fairway bunker down nine. He's 135 yards away, huge trees blocking his line to the green let alone the pin and simply no way he can find the green. Well, fast forward to 4mins 3secs in this video to see what happened next...

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with PING We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is PING's Glide Forged wedge. This wedge generates more spin and control than ever before thanks to its precision-milled grooves, which create more friction for improved spin and trajectory control. It's available in lofts between 50 and 60 degrees, allowing us to fit you into the perfect set-up for your game. |
